Where to Go in Brno?

Meeting Point | ENG

The programme of the International Festival of Theatre Schools AETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER is rich and varied. Apart from the main programme, consisting of productions by foreign schools, we can also expect off-programme performances by students of the JAMU Theatre Faculty, as well as parties. What exactly the programme offers is available on social media and on the website. A printed programme will also be available at the festival Infocentre during the festival. But where to go when you get a moment to spare? Brno is a students’ city with lots of businesses, but also galleries, museums, and monuments. Here are some more tips on where to spend your time outside the theatres and our festival:

When it comes to exploring Brno, it is worth seeing several places that are close to the centre itself. These places are away from the hustle and bustle of the city and also promise a shorter walk:

Špilberk Castle

Denis Gardens

Lužánky Park

Open Gardens

Cow Hill

Tyrš park

For those moments you'd like to spend in peace with a coffee or tea, here are some tips for cosy cafes near all the festival venues. Some of them also have lovely gardens, so you don't always have to sit inside:

Mitte

Anoda

Podobrazy

Punkt.

Ponava

And some cafes also offer breakfast and brunch:

Skog

Kafe v rozkladu

Kafec

Rebio

But at the same time, we can't forget the places that offer discounts to festival-visitors at SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER. All you need to get your discount is our festival Off pass.

4 rooms – discount 15%

KOFI-KOFI – discount 20 %

Kalifornian – discount 15 %

Rebio – discount 15 %

For more tips on where to go in Brno during your free time, visit the Brno Tourist Information Centre, which also helped create this article. And finally, a few words from Zuzana Mičkalová, the brand manager of the TIC and a graduate of JAMU, who supplements our article with her recommendations:

"Brno boasts a lively centre, but there are also ways to relax in it. The Old Town Hall tower offers the most beautiful view of the city centre, and thanks to its area of less than 2 km² , the centre can be walked in a few dozen minutes. However, if instead of a stroll, the tranquillity of one of the many gardens gets your vote, that is fine too! The concentration of great businesses in Brno is unparalleled. Bars, cafes, restaurants, bistros... The best of them are recommended by the Gourmet Brno guide.

The city centre also belongs to festivals, with events being held here almost every weekend, and music is played not only in clubs and halls, but also in squares, streets, and parks. The diverse cultural scene is completed by theatres, galleries, and museums, an overview of which can be found on GOtoBRNO.cz.

Of course, Brno is the place to go to see the iconic Tugendhat Villa. But other pearls of functionalism, famous Brno villas, and forgotten documents of industrial history are also worth a visit. A new addition is the Žlutý Kopec Water Tanks. These brick and concrete buildings resembling underground cathedrals are unrivalled in Europe, and complement our other underground spaces. Whether on your own or with a guide, the BRNOPAS tourist card will ensure a good experience.

Brno can be enjoyed to the full at any time of the year, and a weekend is not enough. Apart from memories and lots of photos, you should take back something from local artists or a designer souvenirs. Because the best gifts are those from Brno!"

And now all that's left to do is to wish you a lot of great experiences and fun, both during your stay in Brno and, of course, at our festival. The programme is really packed, so be sure to follow our social networks, where all the latest information will be added throughout the festival. We look forward to seeing you there!
