Ambassador

For this year's edition of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER, Jaromír Nosek has been appointed ambassador. This Czech actor, who has acted in many theatres not only in the Czech Republic but also in Slovakia, is known mainly for his roles in the film Rebels or in the series Vyprávěj. He is a graduate of JAMU and has worked in Brno at the National Theatre Brno, Theatre Goose on a String, and Polárka Theatre. He is currently performing in various theatres in Prague. As ambassador he appears in the festival TV spot, and we can look forward to seeing him at the Opening and the Closing ceremonies. But before he comes to Brno, you can read this interview with him.

Looking back to the past – ENCOUNTER from the perspective of the 2002 coordinator

The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER has a long tradition and its origins date back to 1991, when the first edition took place. Since then, much has changed, both in the form of the festival itself and in the number of schools that visit us each year. What hasn't changed, however, are the organizers of the festival, who, as I mentioned in my previous article, are Theatre Management and Stage Technology students. So why not stop for a moment and look back at the past? Through this interview with Jana Bejvlová, a 2002 graduate of Theatre Management at JAMU, we can take a look at how the festival was run twenty years ago.

The Core Organising Team

With the arrival of the new year, it suddenly seems that the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER is getting dangerously close. (And it really is.) Three months will pass like water and the Theatre Faculty JAMU will start to fill up with foreign students, guests from different parts of Europe and, last but not least, students of JAMU. Of course, the theatres will not remain empty either. Every year the festival offers a varied program: theatre performances, parties, workshops, and discussions with the creators of individual productions or V4 discussion (the topic is the cultural and political situation in the countries of the Visegrad Group). We firmly believe that for all the participants whom we welcome to Brno, it will be a wonderful five days.

ENC: BLIZZARD COMING

Newly-arrived winter has covered the streets of Brno with snow, and preparations for Christmas are in full swing. We here at JAMU were not going to be left out. That's why on 5th December, 2023 the Christmas party "ENC: BLIZZARD COMING" took place as part of the Off-Programme of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER.

Dissolution of the anthill or Fin

It seems like only a few days have passed since Tuesday's "Grand Opening". The welcoming whirlwind finally turned out to be a cyclone of showers, which I guess only bothered us when moving from theatre to theatre, but after a while spring came to visit us. This festival in Brno offered a plethora of notable international university productions, the opportunity for interesting intellectual development in workshops and discussions with the production teams, and last but not least, entertainment in the clubs.

Grand Final of the 33rd edition

After a nourishing week of theatre, we were all eagerly anticipating this evening. In the general excitement of our grand cultural experience, we could easily have missed the presence of the jury at the individual performances. They carefully evaluated all the productions so that they could fairly and responsibly choose who the best of the best was

Mammon Is Reason That Has Forsaken Me!

Personas is a monodrama that explores just what theatrical illusion is capable of. It is largely based on the solid foundation of commedia dell'arte, which it then abandons and transforms into buffoonery and a feast of fools. The performance included a part with a speech to the audience who do not understand Czech, having most likely been added for festival purposes. They were assured that even though the text is a significant component of this work, an intense experience can be had through the merely observing the acting. And, undoubtedly, that was the case.
